The health and well-being of our visitors and staff is our priority. Following CDC and state and local health department guidelines, the Art Institute of Chicago has adopted the following protocols in an effort to help reduce the transmission of COVID-19.

  1. Updated hours: The museum will be open to the public Monday 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Thursday–Friday 1–8 p.m., and Saturday–Sunday 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Member-only hours are Monday 10–11 a.m., Thursday–Friday 12–1 p.m., and Saturday–Sunday 10–11 a.m. The museum is closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
  2. Transactions: Advance ticket purchase is required. Limited ticket types, including free tickets that require proof of residence or other identification, will still be available on-site.
  3. Face coverings: All visitors age 2 and up who are able must wear a face covering in the museum’s public spaces, including galleries, entrances, exterior staircases, and gardens.
  4. Physical distancing: Wherever possible, all visitors must abide physical distancing guidelines—maintaining a six-foot distance from others not part of your visiting group.
  5. Capacity: All visitors must abide by gallery capacity limits.
  6. Health: Visitors who are not feeling well for any reason or (a) have any COVID-19 Symptoms (b) have had a positive COVID-19 test in the past 14 days, and/or (c) have had close contact with anyone confirmed or suspected of having COVID-19. In such cases, visitors are asked to postpone their visit for another day. Simply request a refund online.
  7. Checkroom: The checkroom is closed, so please pack lightly for your visit. The following items will not be allowed in the museum: bags and purses larger than 13 x 17 x 4 inches, backpacks, backpack baby carriers, shopping bags, art materials other than a pencil, flowers, balloons, food, drink, toys, tripods, flash attachments, video cameras, selfie sticks, long umbrellas, and wrapped packages.
  8. What’s on view: Some of the museum’s galleries may be closed or off view. Check current closures on our website before your visit.
  9. Limited amenities: In addition to the checkroom, the following services will not be available during the first phase of reopening: restaurants, all auditoria, valet parking, Ryan Learning Center, Member Lounge, Library Reading Room, and all curatorial study rooms (photography, prints and drawings, and textiles).
  10. Risk: An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. Those visiting the museum do so at their own risk to such exposure.
  11. We reserve the right to require visitors who do not follow our face covering and physical distancing guidelines to leave the premises immediately. Any visitors who are disrespectful or discourteous to other guests, staff, or volunteers may also be asked to leave.
