How Many People Does It Take to Move a Painting? | Art Institute Shorts

A group of workers in gloves and aprons install a large Renaissance painting, El Greco's The Assumption of the Virgin. Four people hold the bottom of the painting. On either side, four others use a mechanical lift to secure the top.

Moving any artwork requires skilled and well-coordinated art handlers—and moving one of the largest paintings in our collection requires lots of them!

It took 12 of our in-house experts to safely deinstall El Greco’s The Assumption of the Virgin so that it could be transported to Spain for the Museo del Prado’s El Greco. Santo Domingo el Antiguo.
