Read, watch, or listen to more than 200 oral histories of Chicago-based architects, artists, and designers.

Chicago Architects Oral History Project

The Chicago Architects Oral History Project (CAOHP) was established in 1983 to record the life experiences of architects who shaped the built environment in Chicago and surrounding communities. It was intended to not only fill a void in the literature, but also to explore motivations and influences, behind-the-scenes stories, and personal reflections of architects. This collection contains career-in-review documents as well as shorter, focused interviews.

Artists Oral History Archive

This archive contains over 200 oral histories and interviews of predominantly Chicago-based artists and designers drawn from three collections.

70 Plus: Chicago Visual Artist Oral History Archive, collected by Linda L. Kramer and Sandra Binion between 2010 and 2013, documents the personal and professional lives of dozens of Chicago visual artists.

The New Bauhaus/Institute of Design interview project, made possible by a generous grant from the Moholy-Nagy Foundation, was initiated in preparation for the exhibition Taken by Design: Photographs from the Institute of Design, 1937–1971 (David Travis and Elizabeth Siegel, The Art Institute of Chicago, 2002).

The Kit Schwartz Archive contains interviews conducted by Schwartz for her seminal work “A Semiographic Representations of Art During the Seventies.” Includes interviews with artists, musicians, collectors, gallerists such as Andy Warhol, Marcel Broodthaers, Marcia Tucker, Leo Castelli, Elizabeth Murray, Vito Acconci, and Carl Andre.
