Over the past thirty-five years, David and Celia Hilliard have amassed a remarkable collection of Old Master, 19th-century, and modern drawings, as well as of French sculpture from the 19th century. This collection includes significant drawings by Claude Vignon, George Romney, Jean-François Millet, Edgar Degas, Odilon Redon, James Ensor, Jan Toorop, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse, among many others, as well as a group of sculptures by artists including Jean-Baptiste Clésinger, Auguste Rodin, and Charlotte-Gabrielle Besnard.

Dreams and Echoes features ninety-one of the most extraordinary pieces from this collection, with a special focus on 18th- and 19th-century British drawings and French drawings and sculptures of the 19th century. Each work is accompanied by a physical description, provenance, bibliography, and exhibition history, along with discussion of the work’s attribution, subject, and function. An international team of scholars and experts offers insight into the artworks, resulting in an illuminating book about a collection of exceptional quality.
