The Art Institute of Chicago Museum Studies, published twice annually, presents articles on the collections and history of the Art Institute. This special issue is devoted to the museums’ renowned collection of Asian art. The issue begins with an illustrated survey of the Art Institute’s recent acquisitions from China, Japan, Indonesia, Tibet, Kashmir, and Nepal. Essays that follow examine important areas of the museum’s Asian collection: bronze and stone sculptures from South India; early Chinese paintings, including scrolls, wall fragments, and fans; and two types of Japanese woodblock prints—privately published works for special occasions (surimono) and prints that incorporated Western perspective into their compositions (uki-e).
