The Art Institute of Chicago
Museum Studies
Volume 23, no. 1 (Spring 1997)
Edited by Michael Sittenfeld
The Art Institute of Chicago Museum Studies, published twice annually, presents articles on the collections and history of the Art Institute. This special issue, which has been published in conjunction with the exhibition Rooted in Chicago focuses on textile design in Chicago since World War II. The author of this issue, Christa C. Mayer Thurman, who has been the curator of textiles at the Art Institute since 1968, discusses five textile design firms whose output was inextricably tied to the modernist aesthetic sensibilities of Chicago during this time. In addition to chapters on each firm, this issue includes a color portfolio of the Art Institute’s finest textiles created by these firms, an epilogue on the author’s personal involvement with the designers, and technical notes on textile printing.
