Vol. 26, no. 1 (Spring 2000)
Edited by Gregory Nosan
The Art Institute of Chicago Museum Studies, published twice annually, presents articles on the collections and history of the Art Institute. This special issue, published as the catalogue for the exhibition “Maineri to Miró: The Regenstein Collection Since 1975,” is dedicated to the forty Master drawings that have been added to the museum’s distinguished Regenstein Collection over the past twenty-five years. Ranging from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries and including important works by European artists including Gian Francesco de’ Manieri, Claude Lorrain, Antoine Watteau, Thomas Gainsborough, Georges Seurat, and Joan Miró, the Regenstein Collection–initiated by philanthropist Helen Regenstein and continued by her children–is perhaps the most important such collection built in concert with a museum in the late twentieth century. In this publication, an introductory essay on the collection’s history and evolution is followed by rich, full-page color plates and engaging entries on each recent addition. Written by a team of Art Institute curators and scholars, this issue serves both as a guide to the exhibition and an introduction to many of the most famous and impressive drawings in the collection.
