Featuring more than forty objects handpicked by President and Eloise W. Martin Director James Cuno, this issue of Museum Studies continues the Art Institute’s project to bring its collecting activities into public view. The museum’s curators and researchers take an extended look at important acquisitions made from 2007 through 2009, surveying a dazzling range of works by artists both ancient and modern. Among the objects highlighted are a Maya vessel that provides insight into this culture’s cosmology; a twelfth-century Japanese sutra scroll painted in gold and silver, complete with its original wrapper; three graceful vases inspired by the artistic and social reforms of the Arts and Crafts movement; and Hinoki, an imposing sculpture by contemporary artist Charles Ray, on view in the museum’s new Modern Wing. Also included are significant designs, paintings, photographs, textiles, and works on paper by artists as diverse as François Boucher and William Eggleston. Filled with generous color illustrations and an engaging, accessible text, this publication is an indispensable guide to the newest and finest that the Art Institute has to offer.
