The Art Institute of Chicago
Museum Studies
Vol. 26, no. 2 (Fall 2000)
Edited by Gregory Nosan
The Art Institute of Chicago Museum Studies, published twice annually, presents articles on the collections and history of the Art Institute. This special issue is the first publication devoted entirely to the Art Institute’s exceptional collection of Chinese textiles. Coinciding with an exhibition of the same title, Clothed to Rule the Universe showcases approximately eighty objects from the museum’s collection of roughly five hundred Chinese textiles dating from the seventeenth to the early twentieth century. A main essay surveying the entire collection is followed by brief, engaging entries examining individual works, and by a short article that explores the fascinating history of Chinese-textile collecting in Chicago. A complete checklist and detailed technical data on each piece are also provided. Richly illustrated with full-color reproductions, this publication serves both as a guide to the Art Institute’s important Chinese-textile holdings and an essential reference source for all those interested in these brilliant artifacts.
