Museum Studies
Volume 15, no. 2 (Fall 1989)
Edited by Rachel A. Dressler
The Art Institute of Chicago Museum Studies, published twice annually, presents articles on the collections and history of the Art Institute. This issue features articles on four artists represented in the departments of European painting and sculpture: a survey of works by Jean-Léon Gérôme at the Art Institute, an examination of Louis Léopold Boilly’s vision of the world in Moving House, an analysis of Dieric Bouts’ Sorrowing Madonna, and a study of a Neoclassical vase by sculptor Clodion. In addition, an article explores the iconography of an early twentieth century Yoruba sculpture by Olowe. In differing ways, these works all demonstrate artistic alternatives either to previous artistic practice or to prevailing cultural ideas.
