The Art Institute of Chicago
Museum Studies
Volume 2 (1967)
Edited by John Maxon
Museum Studies presents studies of works of art in the Art Institute of Chicago. It has long been felt that the scholarly obligation of the museum can only adequately be met by such an annual publication. We have invited distinguished specialists to join our staff in preparing these studies. This issue offers a comparison between a newly-discovered Géricault watercolor and his La Tempête paintings, a review of five recently-acquired early paintings by the Austrian Baroque artist Johann Michael Rottmayr, an account of Mary Cassatt’s artistic development through paintings and pastels, a stylistic analysis of Gino Severini’s Self Portrait with Canotier, an introduction to a recently-acquired Maya ball game relief, and an overview of joiners’ tools in the Art Institute collection.
