CHICAGO—The Art Institute of Chicago is pleased to announce its exhibition schedule for the remainder of 2026.
Visitors will have the opportunity to experience exhibitions ranging from an exploration of Mary Cassatt’s most innovative compositions to newly created paintings from contemporary artist Jill Mulleady to the first retrospective of Beatriz González, one of Latin America’s most renowned contemporary artists. This diverse exhibition calendar highlights the Art Institute’s ability to tell stories across time, cultures, and geographies.
Beyond Form: Abstraction at Midcentury
June 27–October 19, 2026
Featuring 65 artists from more than 23 countries, Beyond Form explores how abstraction emerged as a powerful visual language between 1940 and 1970, a period of global upheaval and transformation. Artists in this exhibition include Ruth Asawa, Helen Frankenthaler, Jackson Pollock, Sam Gilliam, Mark Rothko, and Yayoi Kusama.
Lee Miller: Fearless
August 29–December 7, 2026
The first comprehensive survey of the versatile photographer’s work in more than 25 years, Lee Miller: Fearless brings together the major episodes of Lee Miller’s singular career—from her early fashion photos and Surrealist compositions through her portraits of artist friends and moving wartime images.
Mary Cassatt: After Impressionism
September 6, 2026–January 3, 2027
Uncompromising and fearless, Mary Cassatt is known for her signature Impressionist compositions of women and children; however, in the late 1880s to the early 1900s, she pursued daring work across media and scale, including printmaking and mural painting. This exhibition shifts the framework of understanding from Cassatt the Impressionist to Cassatt the unwavering experimenter, highlighting her modernist aesthetics, breakthroughs, and lasting impact on both sides of the Atlantic.
Jill Mulleady: The Passenger
September 19, 2026–January 18, 2027
Drawing from art-historical, cinematic, and literary sources, Jill Mulleady’s memorable images can haunt the viewer long after encountering them. This exhibition—Mulleady’s first solo show at a major museum—brings together more than a dozen new and recent paintings by the artist.
Beatriz González: In Series and Full Color
November 14, 2026–March 1, 2027
This is the first retrospective dedicated to the drawings and prints of Beatriz González (1932–2026), one of Latin America’s most renowned contemporary artists. Bringing together more than 80 works produced over six decades, In Series and Full Color explores how González developed a prolific body of work that transformed mass-media images into enduring symbols of memory, grief, and political critique.
Exhibitions Currently on View
Willem de Kooning Drawing (closing September 20, 2026) is the first major exhibition to examine the artist’s expansive drawing practice, and the first solo presentation of his work at the Art Institute since 1969.
Self, Made: Fourteen Modern Artists from the Richard and Ellen Sandor Family Collection (closing November 9, 2026) includes nearly 40 works across photography, drawing, painting, and sculpture that tell stories of self-invention and draw exclusively from the Richard and Ellen Sandor Family Collection.
Embroidered Traditions from Morocco to Afghanistan (closing January 25, 2027) features over 70 works primarily from the Art Institute’s collection, and is the museum’s first exhibition devoted exclusively to the artistic and cultural traditions of Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA).
Abigail Lucien: Blood of Earth (closing January 25, 2027) presents a series of new sculptural works by Haitian American artist Abigail Lucien, and explores the ways that iron connects us to histories, the material world, and each other.
