Join Antony Penrose, co-director of the Lee Miller Archives, as well as the artist’s son and biographer, and Matthew S. Witkovsky, Richard and Ellen Sandor Chair and Curator, Photography and Media and curator of Lee Miller: Fearless, for an intimate conversation on the photographer’s impact on the world.

Miller’s extraordinary career, from her participation in French Surrealism to her fashion and war photography, was trailblazing to say the least. Exploring her artistic collaborations, this conversation will also shed light on lesser-known sides of her practice and life.

about the speakers

Antony Penrose has dedicated a large part of his life to research into the lives of his parents Lee Miller and Roland Penrose and their circle of artists and friends. He lectures from the unique standpoint of a person who personally knew many of the artists he researches and illustrates his talks with documents and images from the Lee Miller Archives and the Penrose Collection.

An accredited NADFAS lecturer, he has also lectured for institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Britain, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Museu Picasso Barcelona, Museum Ludwig, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Matthew S. Witkovsky is the Richard and Ellen Sandor Chair and Curator, Photography and Media, and vice president for strategic art initiatives. Highlights among the many exhibitions he’s curated since joining the Art Institute in 2009 include Revoliutsiia! Demonstratsiia! Soviet Art Put to the Test (2017); Moholy-Nagy: Future Present (2016); Christopher Williams: The Production Line of Happiness (2014); and Light Years: Conceptual Art and the Photograph, 1964–1977 (2011). In 2016 he received the Kraszna-Krausz Award for Provoke: Photography in Japan between Protest and Performance.
