The 20 prints of Matisse’s Jazz make their Art Institute debut, alongside more than 50 paintings, sculptures, and drawings, showcasing the artist’s career-long fascination with color and line.

Luminary are invited to join Emily Ziemba, director of curatorial administration and research curator, Prints and Drawings, for a special look at this exhibition.

Begin the evening with curatorial remarks in Fullerton Hall. Then enjoy time to explore the exhibition, followed by cocktails and conversation with fellow Luminary.

This event is open exclusively to Luminary members and requires advance registration. Please note that the program occurs when the museum is closed to the public; registered guests will be provided entry instructions in advance of the program.

About Matisse’s Jazz

Created in the 1940s when Matisse was in his 70s and recovering from major surgery, these bold compositions capture the artist reinventing his practice. The 20 vibrant cut-paper maquettes made by Matisse were reproduced using pochoir (stencil) and combined with an original text written by the artist to form the unbound book, Jazz, whose debut electrified the art world and set Matisse on a new course of creative discovery.

This special presentation marks the first time the Art Institute has displayed Jazz in its entirety since acquiring it in 1948. The book—one of the 20th century’s most celebrated artist’s books—is accompanied by more than 50 paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, and textiles that trace Matisse’s lifelong pursuit of expression through color and line.
