What should a work of art look like? What function should a work of art and the artist serve in society? These questions have long been debated, but the early 20th century marked a pivotal turning point in how they were answered by European artists. Within just a few short decades, long-held assumptions and standards about art shifted completely.

In the first of this free three-session program, join us to learn about the major innovations in European art at the outset of the century and the international influences that inspired them.

What Is Modernism? is a free, three-week class introducing participants of any experience level to the histories, stories, and ideas expressed in the Art Institute collection. This is the first of three sessions.

what to expect

This program will begin in Studio B in the Ryan Learning Center, which is accessible via the Modern Wing Entrance. After a brief introduction, participants will move into the galleries to engage directly with the works in close looking and critical discussion. Galleries are accessible via stairs and elevator. There will be folding stools available for seating in the galleries. ASL interpretation and/or assisted listening devices are available upon request at [email protected]
