This iteration of Writing in the Galleries, led by Ginia Sweeney, is dedicated to the idea of archives. How do archival documents like letters, receipts, articles, and more work together to convey historical narratives? What happens when they conceal more than they reveal? We’ll look at copies of real archival documents from the Art Institute’s files and write our own imagined documents that gesture to a larger story.

Writing in the Galleries is a program series that invites visitors to write in response to the art they see. Programs are facilitated by staff members. You are encouraged to bring your favorite notebook and pencil.

about the facilitator

Ginia Sweeney, director of interpretation at the Art Institute of Chicago, works at the intersection of art and audience. Alongside collaborators across the museum, she develops and implements accessible, engaging, and relevant narratives in the galleries. In her own writing practice, she frequently explores family stories, the interplay of words and images, and intergenerational trauma.

what to expect

This is a participatory writing workshop that will take place in the galleries. Writing materials and gallery stools will be provided. If you have any accessibility-related requests and would like to request accommodations, please email museum_interpretation@artic.edu.
