Join curators Jacquelyn N. Coutré and Gloria Groom for a lively discussion about the wildly popular Dutch artists Rembrandt van Rijn and Vincent van Gogh. Explore how the unique ambitions and groundbreaking achievements of these two artists, separated by centuries, both aligned and diverged; examine the influence Rembrandt may have had on Van Gogh; and discover what makes these two master artists among the most celebrated around the world today.
About the Speakers
Jacquelyn N. Coutré is the Eleanor Wood Prince Curator in Painting and Sculpture of Europe at the Art Institute of Chicago. Since her arrival in 2019, she has overseen the 2021 reinstallation of the 17th-century Dutch and Flemish galleries, acquired paintings by Edwaert Collier and Maria van Oosterwijck, and curated Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde: The Modern Landscape (2023). She specializes in early modern Northern European art, with an emphasis on Rembrandt’s circle, artistic competition and exchange, and collecting histories.
Gloria Groom is chair and Winton Green Curator, Painting and Sculpture of Europe, and executive director of initiatives in France at the Art Institute of Chicago. Since joining the museum in 1985, she been involved in numerous major monographic exhibitions and their accompanying catalogues, including the upcoming exhibition Gustave Caillebotte: Painting Men (2025), Monet and Chicago (2020–21), Manet and Modern Beauty (2019), Gauguin: Artist as Alchemist (2017), Van Gogh’s Bedrooms (2016), and Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity (2012–13).
