Fabrics dyed with indigo
Join fellow teen creatives and artist Sarita Garcia for an exploration of textiles, color, and community. We will experiment with natural dyes such as turmeric and indigo and use Shibori techniques to create dynamic fabric designs. The activity will culminate in a collective weaving, in which participants will layer yarn and mixed media over their work to reflect the power of community.
This program is presented in collaboration with artist Sarita Garcia and inspired by the exhibition En el principio/ In the beginning: Juliana Góngora Rojas, Matías Quintero Sepúlveda, Juven Piranga Valencia, and Yinela Piranga Valencia, in which four artists have transformed earth, pigments, milk, and plant fibers into woven narratives.
The program also includes a visit to the galleries. Museum admission is not required. All materials will be provided, and no prior experience is necessary.

Sarita Garcia is a Chicago-based artist, educator, and cultural worker born and raised in South Tejas. Her practice in fiber art and printmaking is informed by the architectural spaces of her vernacular culture and utilizes an image archive of markets to talk about consumerism, identity, and cultural hubs. These “Fantasyscapes” showcase a vocabulary of iconography as a means of empowering and remixing the reality of the spaces they reference. She has exhibited work in Chicago at the National Museum of Mexican Art, the Hyde Park Art Center, the Chicago Art Department, the Chicago Cultural Center, Roots & Culture, Heaven Gallery, ACRE, Mana Contemporary, SITE Galleries, and Sullivan Galleries. Garcia resides on the West Side of Chicago, where you can find her in the studio alongside her partner and two dogs, Floresita and Rocko. She enjoys cumbia and salsa tunes, lots of laughs, and warm food.
