Hands reach from every corner of this collage towards flowers, jewels, and a large red vase.

Use collage to explore the form and meaning of artful bouquets. What can a bouquet tell us about a culture’s relationship to nature? Do bouquets have a politics? What goes into making a stunning flower arrangement?

Consider these and other questions while designing a paper bouquet of your very own in this Saturday Studio.

Saturday Studio is an art-making experience in the galleries led by Chicago-based artists that welcomes participants of all experience levels. The program is free with admission and all requisite materials are provided. The program is primarily designed with adult visitors in mind, though it is open to participants of all ages.

about the teaching artist

Magdalena Gabriela Dumitrescu (Magda) is from Atlanta, and won’t let you forget it. They are a multimedia, disabled artist and anthropologist based in Chicago. Dumitrescu combines art and anthropological research to make information about the climate crisis more accessible to document the present and imagine possibilities of a more equitable future for disabled people. They also work in Backyard Surrealism, creating solace and exploring quotidian magic using a combination of folkloric influences from the Balkans and the American South. They use this framework to explore the plasticity of time and memory and are interested in how we carry our homes in tangible and non-tangible structures. Their practice includes drawing, painting, collage, multimedia work, one-line drawing, murals, animation, installation, videos, photography, and illustration.
