Paris exists in a class of its own. The ineffable light, the meandering cobblestone streets, the museums teeming with awe-inspiring art—this unmistakable city has shaped generations of artists who exchanged ideas across its shared studios, cabarets, and cafés.

Inspired by this rich, creative history, Luminary are invited to experience the city with Gloria Groom, Chair and David and Mary Winton Green Curator of Painting and Sculpture of Europe and executive director of Initiatives in France. 

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

  • Enjoy an exclusive trip to the private Durand-Ruel archives.
  • Spend the morning on the banks of the Yerres visiting Gustave Caillebotte’s magnificent estate.
  • Go behind the curtains for a backstage look at the costume workshop at the Opera Garnier.
  • Explore the Musée Jacquemart Andrea while it’s closed for an intimate tour of Artemisia Gentileschi.
  • Discover Tadao Ando’s exquisite renovation of the Bourse de commerce, home to the unmatched Pinault Collection of contemporary art.

ABOUT THE CURATOR

Gloria Groom

Gloria Groom is the chair and David and Mary Winton Green Curator of Painting and Sculpture of Europe and executive director of Initiatives in France.

Gloria is an accomplished scholar who specializes in French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. Since joining the Art Institute of Chicago in 1984, she has distinguished herself as a creative, intelligent, and energetic leader to the department of Painting and Sculpture of Europe. In recent years, Gloria has curated a number of celebrated shows, including Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity (2013), Van Gogh’s Bedrooms (2016), Gauguin: Artist as Alchemist (2017), and Cézanne (2022), and she is currently working on the upcoming exhibitions Gustave Caillebotte: Painting His World, opening in May 2025. Her vast accomplishments have garnered global attention. She was named Chevalier dans l’Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur, one of the most prestigious awards given by the French government.

One of the perks of Luminary membership is the opportunity to experience art through travel. The Luminary Travel program offers carefully planned trips complete with exclusive, behind-the-scenes visits to museums, artists’ studios, and private collections led by expert guides and museum curators.

This program is a benefit of Luminary, and eligibility to participate varies by membership level. Domestic trips are open to those at the Luminary Bronze-level and above, and international travel is available for the Luminary Silver-level and above.
