Take inspiration from Georgia O’Keeffe: “My New Yorks” and experience the pleasure of drawing the city en plein air. With O’Keeffe’s visual sensibilities as guide, you can create bold and personal interpretations of the Art Institute’s idyllic North Garden and the surrounding urban landscape in soft pastel, a medium O’Keeffe made her own while responding to the built and natural environment.
In case of rain, the program will be held in the Ryan Learning Center, Studio B, inside the Art Institute’s Modern Wing.
Registration is required and will open on May 22.
Saturday Studio is an art-making experience in the galleries led by Chicago-based artists that welcomes participants of all experience levels. The program is free with admission and all requisite materials are provided. The program is primarily designed with adult visitors in mind, while remaining open to participants of all ages.
about the teaching artist
Leslie Baum is a Chicago-based painter whose work is invitational in nature. Her painting practice is informed by over 20 years as a museum educator at the Art Institute of Chicago. Baum received her B.A. from the University of Vermont and studied abroad at the Glasgow School of Art.
She has exhibited nationally and internationally with exhibitions in New York, San Francisco, Portland, Mexico City, Rome, and South Korea. Her drawings and paintings are in permanent collections of the Art institute of Chicago and the Elmhurst Art Museum. Her work has been reviewed extensively, including in Artforum, Art in America, Hyperallergic, and the Chicago Tribune. She has received residencies at Yaddo and the Vermont Studio Center. A 2020 DCASE grant funded the pleinairarchive.com––a site documenting her ongoing painting social practice.
