A painting rendered in tiny dots of a wide swath of silvery-gray, shimmering river containing a white sailboat and a slim rowboat with one occupant, tiny against the water. In the foreground is an arching tree, beyond, a riverbank and a small square building.

In the Art Institute’s early days, the Buckingham family played a critical role in ensuring the museum’s future. The Buckingham siblings—Clarence, Lucy Maud, and Kate Sturgis—each supported the museum in their own way: Clarence gifted his 2,500 Japanese prints in 1914, and Lucy Maud and Kate donated artworks and established endowments to support the collection’s growth and care. Since then, many more individuals have provided for the museum’s continued strength and excellence with bequests of all sizes.

Support from Buckingham Society members helps ensure visitors of all ages and backgrounds have access to everything the museum offers.
