Quilted portrait of a mother and daughter, both African American. The daughter stands slightly in front of the mother, and they both look into the distance. They wear vibrantly colored and patterned clothing—orange, purple, yellow, lime green. On a gray background are sewn words that seem to be from a letter from daughter to mother expressing love, referencing the title of the work, "Dear Mama."

Hear from curators Jordan Carter and Erica Warren as they discuss the intersections of textiles and contemporary art, opening their conversation with a focus on the work of Bisa Butler, and the Art Institute’s exhibition Bisa Butler: Portraits.

Though Butler’s finished works are exclusively fabric, her methods remain interdisciplinary: photographs inform her compositions and figural choices, she layers fabrics as a painter might layer glazes, and she uses thread to draw, adding detail and texture. Her portraits invite us to examine the work of fellow contemporary artists working with fiber and textiles, and their embrace of unbounded material practices that offer multiple avenues for critical engagement.

We recommend using a laptop or desktop computer, and downloading the latest version of Zoom to enjoy this program.
