Alma Thomas became fascinated with space exploration in the late 1960s when she was in her 70s and started her series of abstract paintings in response to America’s Apollo missions to the moon (1969–72). Although she had never flown, Thomas began to paint as if she were in an airplane, capturing shifting patterns of light and color.
