Note to the Reader

Artist Name: This catalogue spells Paul Cezanne’s name the way the artist signed it, without an accent on the first “e.” The 2022 exhibition Cezanne was the first to adopt this spelling, in accord with the artist’s preference and that of his family; see Achim Borchardt-Hume, Gloria Groom, Caitlin Haskell, and Natalia Sidlina, eds., Cezanne, exh. cat. (Art Institute of Chicago, 2022).

Catalogue Raisonné: The abbreviation FWN prefaces identification numbers used in The Paintings, Watercolors and Drawings of Paul Cezanne: An Online Catalogue Raisonné, edited by Water Feilchenfeldt, Jayne Warman, and David Nash: http://cezannecatalogue.com. It reflects the most up-to-date object and ownership information.

Dimensions: Dimensions are given in the order of height, width, and depth.

Titles: English-language titles are used in references to artworks; alternate titles for those by Paul Cezanne can be found in the associated online catalogue raisonné entry.

Translations: All translations of primary and secondary sources are by the authors of the essay unless otherwise noted. The curatorial essays by Fabienne Ruppen (see cats. 5, 6, 9, 12, and 14) were translated from German to English by Judith Rosenthal.
