Conservation and Science at the Art Institute of Chicago

Responsible for the treatment, research, and long-term preservation of more than 300,000 works of art in the Art Institute’s collections, the Department of Conservation and Science is integral to the museum’s mission to protect the world’s artistic and cultural legacy for future generations.

Every artwork in the Art Institute’s collections—whether it’s on view in the galleries, maintained in storage, or traveling the globe—comes under the care of the Conservation and Science team. This group of dedicated experts uses their specialized knowledge and advanced skills to ensure that each object is studied, conserved, and shared with our audiences for generations to come. Explore this department’s wide-ranging expertise and projects, from conservation treatments to research discoveries and more.

The Art Institute of Chicago does not provide conservation treatment to private clients. If you are in need of a conservator, the American Institute for Conservation provides a Find a Conservator tool. The tool is free and searchable by specialty and geographic region.

The Art Institute of Chicago does not offer artwork appraisals. The American Society of Appraisers and the Appraisers Association both offer guides for contacting specialists in this area.
