Hendrik Folkerts

Hendrik Folkerts is currently the curator of international contemporary art at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Sweden. He served as the Dittmer Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Institute from 2017 through the summer of 2021.

During his time with the Art Institute, he curated many exhibitions, including Malangatana: Mozambique Modern (2020), with Felicia Mings and Constantine Petridis; Vaginal Davis: The White to be Angry (2020), with Solveig Nelson; Anne Imhof: Sex (2019); and Mounira Al Solh: I strongly believe in our right to be frivolous (2018), with Jordan Carter. He spearheaded the museum’s Iterations series of performance commissions, a multiyear initiative presenting works by Alexandra Bachzetsis, Cevdet Erek, Paulina Olowska, and Cally Spooner, among others.

Before joining the Art Institute in 2017, Hendrik was curator of documenta 14 and served in Amsterdam as both curator of performance, film, and discursive programs at the Stedelijk Museum and coordinator of the curatorial programme at the De Appel arts centre. A frequently published scholar and critic, he earned both his bachelor and master’s degrees in art history from the University of Amsterdam.
