Luiz Souza

Dr. Luiz Souza holds an M.Sc. in Chemistry, with experimental work conducted at KIK-IRPA – Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique (Brussels, Belgium, 1986-87). His Ph.D. research, under a Research Fellowship at the Getty Conservation Institute (Los Angeles, USA, 1992-94), focused on scientific studies applied to the characterization of gilding and polychrome materials in colonial Minas Gerais, Brazil. Since 1989, Prof. Souza has taught and researched at CECOR – the Center for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Properties in Brazil. He has also contributed as guest lecturer in universities in France, Italy and Portugal. In Brazil, he leads LACICOR – Conservation Science Laboratory at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. From February 2014 – January 2015, he had a Post-Doctoral Resident Fellowship at Centro di Eccellenza SMAArt - Scientific Methodologies Applied to Archaeology and Art, at the University of Perugia. Prof. Souza is a former Director of CECOR, former ICCROM Council member, currently an elected Fellow of the IIC, and a founding member, ex-President, and current Council Member of ANTECIPA – the Brazilian Association for Research in Technology and Heritage Sciences.
