About this artwork
In developing White Portal, Frankenthaler was most concerned with how best to highlight the delicacy of the central white tusche banner. She tried printing on vibrant-hued papers, but ultimately decided to print the form on a solid field of beige ink. Over thirty trial proofs were pulled and set aside, to be used later in Silent Curtain, before White Portal was finally published.
