About this artwork

Martin Lewis left his home in Castlemaine, Australia, as a boy of 15, and by 1900 he had emigrated to the United States. His first etching was made in 1915; by the end of his life, he had produced some 147 works in this medium. After a sojourn in Japan in 1920–22, his compositions became more dramatic and original, distinguished by unusual viewpoints and sharp distinctions between light and shadow.
