About this artwork
Jean Le Pautre was a prolific printmaker who was known primarily for his ornamental and decorative works in the tradition of Jacques Callot and Stefano della Bella. Le Pautre’s numerous prints depict every imaginable subject. This highly decorative, fanciful self-portrait shows him holding a portfolio; the image is set against a larger composition of antique subject matter, with the genius of the artist pursuing those envious of his talent on the right.
