About this artwork
The painter Ventura Salimbeni was active in Siena and Rome, leaving a group of seven etchings of religious subjects, many produced while working on Vatican frescos in the early 1590s. Here Salimbeni’s mature Madonna lovingly interacts with her child as Saint Joseph stands guard outside. This print was copied several times in the early 17th century, with one version cropped tightly around the main figures, excluding Saint Joseph. All the copies were in reverse, which had the curious effect of correcting the artist’s signature, which was reversed in the original, itself a copy after a Guido Reni etching.
