About this artwork
Beham produced so many tiny engravings that he was known as a Little Master. Several of his ornamental subjects are round in shape, including this one. He packed a surprising number of mischievous boys into this small space, perhaps suggesting a visit to a bathhouse like the one in the woodcut nearby (2010.518). The boy with the boots, seemingly the ringleader, has taken hold of the central boy with malicious intent.
