About this artwork

George Bellows’s vigorous paintings, drawings, and lithographs of boxing subjects brought him tremendous acclaim during his lifetime and remain among his best-known images. In these works, the artist explored the theatricality of this modern subject, placing us so close to the action that we become participants in the tense, noisy spectacle.
