About this artwork

John Sloan was a member of the Ashcan School, a group of artists who studied under Tomas Anschutz at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art and who are best remembered for their realistic, often gritty depictions of modern life in New York. Following the influential Armory Show of 1913, many artists ventured into experiments with abstraction; in this print, Sloan incorporated text and machine parts.
