About this artwork

This etching, which print connoisseur Carl Zigrosser considered among Marin’s most “daring and impetuous,” was made on the artist’s journey through Austria and Germany, which included stops in Kufstein, Munich, Nuremberg, and Strasbourg. Following his brief 1909 return to New York, where he had been reassured by the promise of Stieglitz’s support and enthralled by the grandeur of the city’s new skyscrapers, Marin’s response to European urban scenery changed radically, becoming at once more confident and more intense.
