About this artwork
Long interested in topology, mapping, and distortion, as well as the morphology of form, Hettmansperger based the drawings in her “Chart Series” on navigational ocean charts she used while sailing on the East Coast. Reducing shapes and forms to abstract essences—open spaces in the drawing refer to distance—the artist was interested in creating metaphors for territory, or journeys in unfamiliar places.
