About this artwork

Onchi Kōshirō printed the cloud-like blue shapes in this work by using paper to lay down the ink, and the gray wash was spread on the surface with cloth. He created the butterfly with a woodblock and the leaf is the impression of an actual leaf. The “clouds” vary in size from one edition to another, suggesting that Onchi used different pieces and even different types of paper to improve his compositions as he worked on different versions of the same image.
