About this artwork
Josef Albers studied art at the Weimar Bauhaus, where he served as a professor until the institution closed under Nazi pressure in 1933. After emigrating to the United States, Albers became known for his theoretical studies on pictorial composition and color theory. An influential educator, he taught art at both the Black Mountain School in North Carolina and at Yale University. His disciplined approach to composition and his hard-edged brand of abstraction are evident in this elegant woodcut.
