About this artwork

This bronze helmet was derived from the distinctive leather hat worn by the Thracians from the north and by Phrygians from the east. It is typical of helmets worn by the Macedonian army, especially by members of the infantry, during the fourth century BC. The holes on each side indicate where the cheekpieces were once attached.
