Hendrik Goudt (Dutch, 1583-1648)
after Adam Elsheimer (German, 1578-1610)

About this artwork

Goudt was an engraver, draughtsman and painter. In 1604, he traveled to Rome, where he lived with the German artist Adam Elsheimer from 1607 on, serving as his patron and pupil. His seven engravings after Elsheimer’s work made him famous for his extraordinary mastery of technique. Goudt created this print following his departure from Rome, and probably modeled it after a painting in his own collection.
