About this artwork

Gazing into her small hand mirror, this young girl with braided pigtails is immersed in a tranquil moment from the sophisticated and fashion-conscious Tang court life. She may be absorbed in applying cosmetics, which included mineral pigments that were imported from Persia (now Iran) and Central Asia. The round, waisted stool upon which she sits was new among Chinese domestic furnishings at this time.
