About this artwork

This fine portrait, a rare example on copper, demonstrates Jan Baptist Weenix’s subtle handling of his subject’s distinctive facial features. This work was likely commissioned at the same time as another similarly sized portrait of an older man, also on copper, now in a collection in Kingston, Ontario. While most pendant portraits of the period depicted men and women, paired portraits of men were produced as treasured tokens of friendship or kinship.
