About this artwork

The influential Bolognese painter and etcher Simone Cantarini specialized in intimate religious subjects. The distinctive octagonal shape of his tender, domestic vignette of Mary and Jesus resting during their Egyptian exodus proved popular and was copied by his contemporaries.
