About this artwork

Drawings, photographs, project papers and other materials related to the career of architect Josef Marion Gutnayer. Josef Marion Gutnayer (1911-2004), also known as J. Marion Gutnayer or Josef M. Gutnayer, was a mid-century residential architect who lived andworked in the Chicago metropolitan region following World War II. Gutnayer was born in Poland and graduated from the Ecole des Beaux Arts with a”diplome par le Gouverement” in 1931 after which he remained in Paris to practice with his brother, Henry R. Gutnayer. Working in various Europeanlocales during the 1930s and 1940s, Gutnayer returned to Poland to assist in post-war reconstruction efforts. Following his arrival in the U.S., Gutnayerworked for various firms including Keyy & Gruzen; Skidmore, Owings and Merrill; and Hogan, Brinckeroff & MacDonald. He was the first faculty member inthe architectural department at University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) on Navy Pier, working as an assistant professor and lecturer there until the 1950s. Inaddition to his professional career, Gutnayer was a third generation art collector who devoted considerable time to buying and selling art throughout his lifeas well as assisting in the repatriation of artwork stolen from Jews during World War II.
