Countess Gladys Vanderbilt Szechenyi (1886–1965), Washington, DC, London, Budapest, Czechoslovakia, New York, and Newport, RI, by Dec. 17, 1929 [according to a note from G. Thomas given to the dealer, Simon Franses, 2019, the object was referenced in an inventory as hanging “in 1st floor Library at 1 West 57th Street” and as “taken from 3rd floor storeroom” at 1 East 67th Street; the same note describes that the object was probably in the family as early as the 1890s; copy of note in curatorial object file]; by descent in the family to Gladys Roberts Thomas, New York, until 2019; given to the Art Institute of Chicago, 2019.
