About this artwork

Married architectural partners and Chicagoans Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin were invited to Australia in 1913 to execute Walter’s winning city plan for the new capital, Canberra. The Griffins settled in the suburbs of Sydney, where they established “Castlecrag,” a neighborhood of small houses and community buildings for like-minded artists and intellectuals. This collection is comprised of microfilmed drawings—by the Griffins and others architects—and contemporary newspaper articles about Castlecrag and Walter’s design for an incinerator in Willoughby, Australia. This collection also contains a small group of material relating to the Griffins’ work in the United States and elsewhere.
