About this artwork

Ethel Stein’s portfolio helps illuminate her practice and shed light on the breadth of her interests. Of particular note is a small, spiral-bound notebook that highlights her ties to Josef Albers, with whom she studied in 1941. On one page of the notebook, a sketch of Albers captures his long face, furrowed brow, and spectacles. On the following page, under the heading “Albers,” Stein made notes and drawings related to his ideas of form and the tectonic. These two pages offer a glimpse into the theories that shaped Stein’s approach to art.
