About this artwork

A collection of items that the artist Ethel Stein kept close at hand, she carefully pinned them to a corkboard wall that served as a backdrop in her studio. Included in this group of objects are notes, sketches, and leftover hanks of yarn for Butah (2018.380a-b) a two-panel weaving in the Art Institute’s collection. Also pinned on the wall was a collection of correspondence and ephemera related to the artist Lenore Tawney. Two handmade collage postcards, one addressed “To dear Ethel,” as well as other handwritten notes indicate that these artists were friends who communicated and exchanged ideas. These deliberately arranged items, within easy view and reach of Stein’s loom, provide insight into her working mindset.
