About this artwork

Without a photograph to work from, Judy Seidman relied on descriptions from her peers to render this black-and-white portrait of Simon Thelle Mogoerane, Jerry Mosololi, and Marcus Motaung, also known as the Moroka Three. Members of a guerilla unit of Umkhonto we Sizwe (the African National Congress’s military wing), the Moroka Three were sentenced to death for their involvement in attacks on two police stations that resulted in the death of four officers. The government denied requests to have the men considered prisoners of war under international law. Notwithstanding appeals from sympathizers around the world, the Moroka Three were executed on June 9, 1984.
